Kinser Conquers Quebec
By Tony Veneziano
July 27, 2010 Drummondville, Quebec: Steve Kinser has an amazing record over the years when he visits a track for the first time. With the World of Outlaws, he has scored well over 50 wins in debut events for the series. The 20-time series champion added to that remarkable list in the first World of Outlaws race ever at Canada’s Autodrome Drummond before a standing room only crowd on a picture perfect Tuesday night.
Kinser started outside the front row and battled teammate Donny Schatz early, taking the top spot on the fifth lap exiting turn four on the low side. He quickly pulled away in traffic. The native of Bloomington, Indiana paced the final 31 of 35 laps to his sixth win of the season and 558th of his amazing career.
"It is special," said Kinser. "I thought we may have been jinxed earlier when Johnny (Gibson) said earlier how we have won a lot of races in our first time at a track and I know we have, but you sort of hate hearing it before you go out there."
Kinser was out front for three double-file restarts and chose the low line each time. He led Donny Schatz into turn one on the first two and had Paul McMahan lined up outside on the final restart with six laps remaining. Kinser used strong restarts each time to stay in front aboard the Bass Pro Shops Maxim.
"The leader gets to set the pace with the line he chooses, so I choked them down a bit and caught the moisture getting off four," explained the Hall of Famer. "I didn't want them to get up to speed and get a run at me coming off four. They were pretty slow starts. But that's what you have to do sometimes. Pick a spot and do what you can."
Schatz led the first four laps, used a strong restart on lap 22 to look high off turns one and two in his bid. He used the same strategy on the following lap but could not quite pass. The final restart came with six laps remaining after Schatz stopped while second.
"I didn't really know when to move back up and Donny showed himself and I moved back up on top," Kinser noted. "Then I started running out of fuel on the last five laps and didn't think I was going to make it to the checker on the last lap. It was spitting and sputtering, but we made and that's what matters."
Paul McMahan ended up second to earn his tenth Top Five in the last 12 races, most by anyone in that span. The veteran started fourth in the Great Clips Maxim and got around Chad Kemenah late for third before moving to second when Schatz dropped out.
"We've been real good," said McMahan. "The car was awesome fast all night long. It's just great to be back in Canada. The fans are great and it's unbelievable how packed the place is. Hopefully, we'll be back many times down the road."
Joey Saldana, the current World of Outlaws point leader, finished third after lining up eleventh in the Budweiser Maxim to earn KSE Racing Products Hard Charger. The second generation driver holds a 29-point advantage over Kinser as he chases his first title.
"We were struggling with our car all night and weren't too bad in the feature," said Saldana. "It's hard racing with these guys when you start in the eleventh spot and it's tough to make it up. We had a good solid car and just came home third."
McMahan lined up outside of Kinser on the final restart with six to go. He dove low in turn one to no avail as he kept pace with Kinser on the restart. Coupled with Saldana's third-place, it was the fourth time this season that both Kasey Kahne Racing cars have finished on the podium on the same night.
"My motor wasn't taking off very good so I was trying to get down to the bottom as fast as I could," shared McMahan. "I got down there and had one shot at Steve and he was better than we were. I was probably a third-place car until Donny broke. We came home second and it was a great night for Kasey Kahne Racing."
Jason Meyers is third in points and fourth Tuesday in the GLR Investments KPC. Sam Hafertepe Jr. used a strong restart on lap 29 to power from tenth to fifth in the final six laps in the Lone Star Speedway Maxim. Chad Kemenah scored sixth-place in the Golden Flavor Sesame Sticks Maxim with Kraig Kinser seventh in the Quaker State Maxim. Lucas Wolfe was eighth in the Allebach Racing Maxim with Danny Lasoski ninth aboard the Casey's General Stores Maxim. Jason Sides completed the Top Ten in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim.
The World of Outlaws will return on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31 at Canada’s Ohsweken (Ontario) Speedway.
