A-main (12 laps) Cram shot out to the lead. With one lap in, Breazeale checked up behind Ross's right rear and got into the wall, flipping wildly and tearing the front end off. He was taken to the hospital for observation. Cram led Phillips, Widmar, Ball and Ross back. Widmar and Phillips battled for second while Cram pulled away. On lap eight, he smacked the right rear into the wall hard and a loose condition surfaced. Two laps later with several lapped cars between him and Ball, a sixth running Van Haaften stopped in turn four. With two to go, Cram led Ball, Widmar, Phillips and Marty Stephenson. Widmar worked to get by Ball while Cram pulled away for the win in his first 305 start ever. He filled in for Ray Evernham, who was at the Brickyard 400.
