Race Notes:
7/16/2004 Mount Pleasant,MI DUSTIN DAGGETT 85

Dustin Daggett stormed to his seventh victory of the season Friday night, July 16 as the Sprints On Dirt’s 25th Anniversary Tour made its first stop at Dick Crook’s Mount Pleasant Speedway since 1993. A huge crowd cheered on with approval as the speedy youngster rolled into victory lane with Tim Norman (2nd) and Steve Irwin (3rd) joining him.

"This the first time that I have ever been here" stated Dustin as he emerged from the car. "It is a fast place and I sure like it – I knew that Tim (Norman) was close but I couldn’t tell for sure how close he was" stated Daggett as he celebrated yet another win on the season and bolstered his point lead in the championship chase.

Twenty-eight cars representing three states and Canada entered the event under threatening weather conditions. Dennis Craft took the Cherry Tool Supply opening heat with Daggett capturing the Lane Automotive heat race number two. Dave Fox edged out Mark Broughman for the win in the Crane Cams heat race while Nick Mulheim of Navarre, Ohio captured the Total Seal Inc heat race victory.

The 10 lap Engine Pro Racing "B" Main produced a serious incident on the exit of turn two when Davey Brown contacted the Dewain Medlin machine sending Medlin into a series of flips. Tim Champlin was left facing a blocked track and collected the Brown 13. All drivers emerged from their cars uninjured. Chris Webster resumed his lead on the restart and collected his first win of the season.

The feature event lined up with Denis Craft and Tim Norman setting the pace followed by Daggett and Mulheim in row two. Craft vaulted to an early lead with Daggett, Norman, Mulheim, Eddie Smith, and Gregg Dalman in tow at the end of the first circuit. Lap four produced the first of four cautions as the lead car of Craft slowed coming out of turn two and stopped on the backstretch. Unable to restart the car, Craft retired from the event as the field formed behind Daggett for the restart.

Caution waved again for the second time on lap seven as Gregg Dalman made contact with the front stretch wall, continued on through turn one and exited the racing surface in turn two. Contact with the retaining wall was minor however damage from the initial incident on the front stretch was enough to force Dalman to the pits and out of the event. Mark Irwin also retired while under caution.

The restart found Daggett again on the point with Norman, Mulheim, Smith, and Steve Irwin making up the top five. By lap 10, Steve Irwin had moved into fourth while Jason Blonde slipped into fifth.

Caution again waved on lap thirteen for the Wayne Morrison machine as he looped in turn two. Able to restart on the rear of the field, the green waved again with Daggett resuming command. The final caution of the event waved immediately as the machine of Eddie Smith slowed on the backstretch with a flat tire. Able to make the change in time, Smith rejoined the field at the tail as the green waved again. By lap sixteen, Irwin had climbed to third while Norman continued to chase Daggett for the lead.

The red flag was displayed on lap twenty-two for the car of Eddie Smith as he spun violently off turn three into a wooded area. Amazingly enough, the Smith machine sustained very little damage but was retired.

The final restart found Daggett on the point followed by Norman, Irwin, Mulheim, and Blonde. The concluding eight circuits ran off flawlessly with Daggett picking up the win, Norman second with Steve Irwin coming home third. Nick Mulheim and Jason Blonde rounded out the top five.

Action resumes at Ron Flynn’s Crystal Motor Speedway Saturday, July 17 as the Engine Pro Racing Mid-Season Championship will be contested.
